Description

The novel is set against the tumultuous backdrop of apartheid South Africa in 1972. The story begins with a young white surfer, Stefan, who crosses racial boundaries and has a chance encounter with Yolanda, a young woman of color and a visual artist. Their illegal love affair leads to the birth of a child, whose existence becomes entangled with the political and social upheavals leading up to South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994. The narrative explores the dramatic lengths mothers will go to protect their children and the sacrifices they are willing to make. The book addresses themes such as womanhood, race, and the politics of South Africa during a critical period in its history
